The 706 model of telephone was introduced as the new standard British Telephone in 1959, although the first phones were produced in 1957. It was the first British telephone made of modern plastics. It has smooth curves and is much lighter and more colourful than the earlier Bakelite telephones. It was designed as a joint effort by the GPO Engineering Department, Ericsson's Telephones Ltd and the Council of Industrial Design.
